Middlesbrough and Wrexham will get their first competitive taste of the 2026-27 campaign Friday afternoon when the two Championship clubs meet at Riverside Stadium in the opening round of the Carabao Cup.

For those less familiar with English soccer, the Carabao Cup – also known as the EFL Cup – is a knockout tournament played alongside the regular league season. Unlike the Championship, where clubs collect points over a 46-game schedule, the objective here is simple: win and advance. Round One features 70 clubs from across the English Football League, with the competition eventually building toward the final at Wembley Stadium on March 21, 2027.

This year’s scheduling gives the competition an added wrinkle. The opening round of the Carabao Cup is being played before the Championship, League One and League Two seasons begin the following weekend, meaning Friday’s matchup serves as the first competitive fixture of the new season for both Middlesbrough and Wrexham.

That puts two familiar Championship opponents immediately into a knockout setting at Riverside Stadium. There are no league points at stake and no long schedule to make up for a poor result – one club will move on to Round Two, while the other’s Carabao Cup run will end on opening weekend.
