Ecuador and Germany meet on Thursday afternoon at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey to close out Group E alongside Curaçao and Ivory Coast, who will face off in Philadelphia during the same window.

Germany have already clinched first place in the group after a dramatic come-from-behind 2-1 win over Ivory Coast, so they’ll be competing this afternoon with the goal of staying in form ahead of the knockout rounds.

Ecuador, on the other hand, remain on the outside looking in. After dropping their opener to Ivory Coast 1-0 and suffering a scoreless draw against Curaçao, La Tri sit in third with just one point and need a win today to have any realistic shot at advancing as one of the eight best third-place teams. A loss or draw against Germany almost certainly ends their tournament.

Germany have beaten Ecuador in both of their previous two meetings, a 3-0 win in the group stage at the 2006 World Cup and a 4-2 victory in a 2013 friendly.

Best Bet for Ecuador vs. Germany

Hard Rock Bet’s Stats Hub has every 2026 World Cup matchup covered with endless trends and insights – and for this one, the data is particularly hard to ignore.

Under 2.5 Goals (+125): Three separate trends all point in the same direction. For starters, Under 2.5 Goals has hit in each of Ecuador’s last seven World Cup matches including qualifiers. Additionally, Under 1.5 Goals has cashed in each of Ecuador’s last eight World Cup matches as an underdog. And lastly, Both Teams to Score has failed to connect in 16 of Ecuador’s last 17 World Cup games.

That’s a remarkably consistent picture of a team that keeps scores low and rarely concedes. La Tri’s two outings at this tournament, a 1-0 loss to Ivory Coast and a 0-0 draw with Curaçao, fit the mold perfectly. Even against a German side that put up seven against Curaçao, Ecuador’s defense is built to frustrate, and a Germany team with first place already secured may not press once they’re ahead. At +125, Under 2.5 offers real value in a spot where Ecuador needs to defend for their lives if they wish to somehow upset the four-time World Champs.
