Atlanta has been one of the National League’s best teams all season, entering Tuesday’s matchup at 48-29 and holding a commanding 6.5-game lead over the Phillies atop the NL East. The Braves own one of MLB‘s best run differentials (+96), have been equally effective at home and on the road, and have spent most of the first half looking every bit like a legitimate World Series contender.

Still, they’ll face the Padres on Tuesday night looking to shake off a slight bump in the road. Atlanta has dropped two straight games and was blanked 1-0 by San Diego in Monday night’s series opener despite entering as one of baseball‘s highest-scoring offenses. The lone run came on a Manny Machado solo homer, while Padres starter Michael King dominated the Braves lineup across seven shutout innings.

The Padres, meanwhile, improved to 40-37 with the win and continue to hang around in a crowded National League playoff race. While San Diego trails the Dodgers by nine games in the NL West, they’re firmly in the Wild Card mix – tied with Chicago and Washington for the third and final spot entering Tuesday.

Tonight, the Braves will look to even the series behind JR Ritchie, a 22-year-old right-hander carrying a 1-2 record and a 4.54 ERA into the matchup. San Diego counters with Griffin Canning, who takes the mound with a 1-5 record and a 6.64 ERA in what has been a difficult first half.

Manny Machado Over 1.5 Hits+Runs+RBI (-105): If there’s one name to circle on the board tonight, it’s Machado. The veteran third baseman has been locked in lately, cashing this number in four of his last five games, highlighted by a massive performance against Texas on June 20 and last night’s solo homer that lifted San Diego to victory. His track record against Atlanta is even more impressive. Across 52 career games versus the Braves, Machado owns a .312 batting average with 62 hits, 12 home runs, 30 RBIs and 33 runs scored. He’ll get his first look at Atlanta starter JR Ritchie, and the rookie right-hander enters with a 4.54 ERA and is still searching for consistency at the major league level. Given Machado’s current form and historical production in this matchup, the Over 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBI at -105 offers solid value.
