The Washington Nationals (39-36) head to Florida to take on the Tampa Bay Rays (41-30) Friday night in the opener of a three-game interleague series at Tropicana Field. Right-hander Cade Cavalli is scheduled to make his 16th start of the season for Washington, while veteran Griffin Jax is set to make his 10th consecutive start for Tampa Bay after beginning the year with 11 appearances out of the bullpen.
The Nationals are one of the youngest teams in MLB and were not expected to be serious contenders this season, but they enter Friday three games above .500 and within striking distance of a National League Wild Card spot. Washington has been playing well lately, winning four consecutive series against Arizona, San Francisco, Seattle, and Kansas City, while also winning four of its last five games.
The Rays, meanwhile, have struggled recently. After snapping a stretch of losing 10 of 13 games with a sweep of Boston, Tampa Bay was just swept by the Dodgers and has now lost five of its last six games.

Nationals vs. Rays Best Bet: CJ Abrams Over 0.5 RBIs
CJ Abrams’ 54 RBIs are tied for the fourth-most in MLB this season. The Nationals shortstop drove in one of Washington’s two runs with an RBI double in Wednesday’s 6-2 loss to Kansas City, although his RBI production has slowed in June with seven RBIs this month.
Abrams typically hits cleanup, giving him plenty of opportunities to drive in runs, especially with players like James Wood and his .407 on-base percentage hitting ahead of him.
The counterargument is that Griffin Jax has pitched well as a starter, posting a 2.57 ERA in that role. However, he owns a 4.13 ERA against left-handed hitters, who are batting .286 against him this season.
Jax has allowed just one run (zero earned) over his last 10 innings across his previous two starts, but he also surrendered six earned runs against Detroit on June 1. If the Nationals can get runners on base ahead of Abrams, the 25-year-old should have opportunities to drive them in.
