The Ultimate Fighting Championship heads across the globe this weekend for UFC Fight Night: Fiziev vs. Torres, as the promotion returns to the National Gymnastics Arena in Baku, Azerbaijan for just its second event in the country. The UFC’s first trip to Baku last June drew a sold-out crowd for UFC on ABC: Hill vs. Rountree Jr., and another electric atmosphere is expected as Rafael Fiziev headlines a pivotal lightweight clash against surging contender Manuel Torres. Preliminary bouts begin at 9:00 AM ET, while the main card gets underway at 12:00 PM ET, streaming live on Paramount+.
No. 11-ranked Rafael Fiziev enters Saturday’s main event looking to regain the momentum that once made him one of the lightweight division’s rising contenders. After putting together a six-fight winning streak in the early stages of his UFC tenure, Fiziev has dropped four of his last five bouts. His lone victory during that stretch came via unanimous decision over Ignacio Bahamondes in Baku last June, while losses to Justin Gaethje (twice), Mateusz Gamrot, and most recently MaurĆcio Ruffy have slowed his climb up the rankings. Now competing once again in front of an Azerbaijani crowd, “Ataman” has an opportunity to get his title aspirations back on track.
Torres, meanwhile, has enjoyed plenty of success since earning his UFC contract through Dana White’s Contender Series, winning five of his first six fights in the promotion. All five of those victories came by first-round finish, including recent TKO wins over Drew Dober and Grant Dawson. Known for his relentless pressure and finishing ability, Torres has quickly established himself as a legitimate threat at 155 pounds, and a victory over Fiziev would be one of the biggest of his career while vaulting him further into the lightweight rankings.
